EV charger installation

  • NICEIC Approved Contractor
  • NICEIC Domestic Installer
  • 18th Edition Qualified
  • Part P Compliant
  • 15+ Years Experience

Charging at home is considerably cheaper and more convenient than relying on public chargers, particularly on an overnight tariff. We install home and workplace EV charge points across Lichfield and the surrounding area, fully certified and installed to the 18th Edition requirements that apply specifically to EV charging equipment.

We'll check what your existing supply can actually take before recommending anything, which is the step that gets skipped most often.

What we cover

  • Home charge point installation
  • Workplace and fleet charging
  • Supply and consumer unit assessment
  • Tethered and untethered units
  • Load management where supply is limited
  • Smart chargers with app and tariff control
  • Cable routing and weatherproof mounting
  • Full certification on completion

Checking your supply first

A charge point is a substantial continuous load, and not every property can simply take one without further work. Before quoting we check the incoming supply, the main fuse rating, the earthing arrangement and the spare capacity in your consumer unit.

Sometimes the answer is that the installation is straightforward. Sometimes it means a consumer unit upgrade, or a load-managing charger that reduces its draw when the rest of the house is busy. Either way you find out before the work starts rather than on the day.

Earthing and protection

EV installations have specific requirements that ordinary circuits don't, because you're plugging a large metal object into mains electricity outdoors. Most UK properties use a PME earthing arrangement, which needs either an earth rod or a charger with built-in PEN fault detection to be used safely for EV charging.

We'll specify the right approach for your property's earthing arrangement, along with the correct RCD protection. This is exactly the sort of detail that separates a compliant installation from one that merely works.

Choosing a charge point

Tethered units have the cable permanently attached, which is convenient day to day. Untethered units take any cable, which is more flexible if you change vehicles. Smart chargers let you schedule charging to cheap overnight rates, which for most drivers pays back the difference fairly quickly.

We'll talk through the options for how you actually drive, rather than pushing whichever unit carries the best margin.

Common questions

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A straightforward installation is usually a single day. If the consumer unit needs upgrading first, or the cable run is long or awkward, it can take longer. We will tell you which applies when we quote.

Can I get a grant towards the cost?

Grant schemes change regularly and eligibility has narrowed over time, currently focusing on renters, flat owners and workplaces rather than homeowners with driveways. We will tell you honestly what is available at the time you enquire rather than promising something that may no longer apply.

Can you install a charger if I do not have a driveway?

Charging across a public pavement is not something we can install, as it creates a trip hazard and generally requires local authority permission. If you have off-street parking of any kind, including a shared car park or a garage, there is usually a workable solution.
