Lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else you can do to it, and it is usually the cheapest way to make a space feel finished. We design and install lighting schemes for kitchens, living spaces, gardens and driveways across Lichfield and Staffordshire.
We'll work to your ideas or develop a scheme with you, including circuit layout, switching, dimming and control, and install it all cleanly with proper cable management.
What we cover
- Kitchen and living space lighting design
- LED downlights and under-cabinet lighting
- Feature, accent and cove lighting
- Dimmer and multi-way switching
- Smart lighting and app control
- Garden, patio and driveway lighting
- Outdoor security and PIR lighting
- Replacing dated or failing fittings
Getting the layers right
The most common mistake we're asked to fix is a room lit by a grid of downlights and nothing else. It's flat, it puts light where you don't need it, and it makes a room feel like an office.
A scheme that works usually layers three things: ambient light for general brightness, task light where you actually do things, over a worktop or beside a chair, and accent light to give the room some depth. Getting that balance right is mostly about circuit and switching design, which is far easier to do before the plaster goes on than after.
Outdoor and garden lighting
Outdoor lighting has to survive British weather, so it's specified differently: correctly IP-rated fittings, armoured or properly protected cabling, RCD protection, and enclosures that won't corrode after two winters.
We install everything from subtle path and border lighting to driveway and facade schemes, usually on timers, photocells or app control so you're not switching things manually. Where security is the priority we'll combine it with PIR-triggered lighting, and it pairs naturally with CCTV, since cameras need light to produce a usable image after dark.
Smart and controlled lighting
If you want scene control, app control or integration with a wider smart home setup, it's worth deciding early. Some systems need particular wiring at the switch positions, including a neutral, which is awkward to retrofit later.
We'll talk through the practical trade-offs honestly, including where a simple dimmer does the job just as well as something more elaborate.
Common questions
Can you design the lighting as well as install it?
Yes. We can work from your own plans or an interior designer’s, or develop a scheme with you from scratch, covering fitting positions, circuit layout, switching and dimming.
Do I need to rewire to change my lighting?
Very rarely. Most lighting work is done on existing circuits, though adding significant numbers of new points or moving switch positions will mean new cabling. We will tell you which applies after looking at the job.
Is outdoor lighting safe in the rain?
When it is specified and installed correctly, yes. Outdoor work needs appropriately IP-rated fittings, suitable cabling, proper RCD protection and weatherproof connections. It is an area where cutting corners shows up quickly, usually within a couple of winters.
